Heading Out to Sea
October in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, means only one thing: king crab season. Bering Sea weather reports warn of a massive storm and some of the roughest seas the fleet has seen in years, and the captains must decide whether to shove off or batten down.
Batten Down the Hatches
The captains take advantage of rare, calm weather on the Bering Sea to drop their pots for king crab fishing. But there's an impending storm, and while Sig weighs the risks of fishing vs. running, Johnathan decides that the Time Bandit will fish through the storm. Meanwhile, the Cornelia Marie limps back to Dutch Harbor on one engine for repairs while the storm nips at its heels.
On the Crab
In spite of a torrential downpour and a blinding snowstorm, the crews push on as they fish for Alaskan king crab. A broken crane slows down the Northwestern, the Rollo keeps pulling up female crabs, which are illegal to keep and must be thrown back, and the Cornelia Marie's string of good luck quickly runs out as the boat is plagued by another mechanical problem.
The Finish Line
After a profitable offload on Akutan Island, Captain Sig Hansen and the Northwestern crew are back on the trail of Alaskan king crab. Meanwhile, the crew of the Maverick sees a possible change in command, and the Aleutian Ballad is forced to take a greenhorn back to Dutch Harbor.
Friends and Rivals
The Aleutian Ballad is knocked on its side by a vicious wave, stripping the ship of power and leaving the crew scrambling in the dark. Meanwhile, the exhausted crews of the Time Bandit, the Maverick and the Rollo endure rough weather.
A New Hunt Begins
January in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, finds the fishermen returning to their boats for the opilio crab fishing season. They prep their boats, bait and supplies with the hope that this season will be even more productive than the last.
Smoke on the Water
Amid an Arctic storm, the Time Bandit pushes on with a limited amount of bait, and the Rollo and the Maverick drop their pots quickly to avoid rolling. With the frustrated Cornelia Marie stuck in port, the Northwestern sticks with successful cod instead of fishing for opilio crab.
Man vs. Ice
Bad crab and long days fray nerves and cause fights on the Maverick and the Rollo. The trailblazing Time Bandit presses north into the Arctic onslaught, and Sig Hansen wakes from a short nap to find the Northwestern lost after Edgar sits on wheel watch.
On the Edge
The Time Bandit finds their ice pack as the Rollo fishes through gnarly weather. The crew of the Maverick must work through a shipwide flu epidemic while the Cornelia Marie has trouble finding their crab. The Northwestern moves on from cod to opilio crab.
Pribilof Stare
Freezing weather and severe icing claim their first victim on the Cornelia Marie when a deckhand takes a spill. The Time Bandit navigates the northern ice pack, and deckhands are forced to take breaks from fishing to beat thousands of pounds of icy buildup from every inch of steel. The crews on the Maverick attempt to jury-rig a shattered stiff arm.
Race Against the Ice
The Rollo and the Maverick race back to the crab grounds after heavy offloads on St. Paul Island, but the Rollo's captain is cross with his crew after miscalculations result in 40,000 more pounds of crab than scheduled. The Cornelia Marie offloads an injured deckhand and must finish out their season one man down. Fishing cod before crab pays off for the Northwestern; they entered the season late, but they're on the crab and pulling up huge numbers.
Cashing In
Facing the end of the season, the fleet is scrambling to the deep and pushing the fishing into overdrive. The Maverick does some precision fishing on the ridges of ocean floor cliffs, and the Northwestern continues pulling up massive pots. But with full holds and iced-over decks full of pots, the risk of tipping over while steaming back to port is high.
A Tragic Beginning
Dutch Harbor, Alaska, the largest fishing port in the United States, is buzzing as 81 fishing vessels, including the Northwestern, the Cornelia Marie and the Time Bandit, return to start the 2006 red king crab season. Rick Quashnik cedes control of the Maverick to a new captain, and as the fishermen drop their first pots, an emergency radio distress beacon goes off.
The Unforgiving Sea
After a fishing boat sinks, the fleet works with the Coast Guard to find survivors. While equipment failures plague the Northwestern and the Cornelia Marie, the Time Bandit and the Maverick start fishing only to have one boat come up empty while the other fills pots.
Pain and Paybacks
After a deadly start, the Bering Sea is still claiming victims. Working in high seas, a deckhand on the Wizard suffers a crippling injury, leaving the captain scrambling to shore. On the Northwestern, a deckhand fears possible jail time, and the Farwest Leader finds pots of gold at the hands of the captain's wife.
Cheating Death
Halfway through crab season, the grind is on as crews work 40 hours without sleep. Equipment failures, fatigue and bad weather make fishing even more dangerous. Both the Maverick and the Farwest Leader must stop for repairs, and the Time Bandit rescues a fisherman who has fallen off a passing crab boat.
Bering Sea Salvation
As the end of the king crab season draws near, the captains consider their positions in a friendly captains' wager made before the season. The Time Bandit crew starts dropping gear and hauling in record numbers. The Northwestern brings in huge pots of keepers, but on the Wizard, the crew is struggling to make their final offload.
The Last Lap
The red king crab fishing marathon comes to a close. Sig Hansen and the Northwestern crew finish a 30-hour grind and steam for port while Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie returns to Dutch Harbor injury-free. With money in their pockets, the fishermen return home for a short rest before returning for the opilio crab season.
New Beginnings
As the opilio crab season opens, several greenhorns experience the subfreezing temperatures and icy winter waters of the Bering Sea for the first time. The Northwestern's pots are battered by rough weather and sea lions, and the Time Bandit bets the farm on a secret location where there may be no crab at all.
Caught in the Storm
Only days into opilio crab season, a major storm system has arrived on the fishing grounds. High seas cause Andy Hillstrand to call his men off deck on the Time Bandit moments before a rogue wave hits the starboard side. Off to a slow start, the Northwestern is plagued by bad luck as an engine problem forces the boat to head for port.
Crossing the Line
Busted buoys, broken pots and a blown engine put the Northwestern more than a week behind schedule, so Sig takes a chance and drops all of his gear far north of the rest of the fleet. A monster storm blows through the Time Bandit and Cornelia Marie's grounds. Both boats fish through the onslaught, and it pays off for the Cornelia Marie with decent numbers.
Trials of the Greenhorns
Greenhorns are put to the test as the Bering Sea's harsh winter weather deteriorates. A greenhorn on the Wizard has only worked three days and is already faltering, but the Northwestern and Cornelia Marie greenhorns step up to prove their worth.
Ice and Open Water
The promise of a great catch outweighs the dangerous risks of opilio crab fishing season. The Farwest Leader tries to survive the loss of one engine, the Time Bandit is caught in a crippling ice pack when the weather changes drastically, and the Northwestern tries to stay ahead of the ice pack.
A Frozen Finish
It's the end of opilio crab season, and while some of the greenhorns have succeeded in their quests to become Bering Sea crab fishermen, others won't be coming back. The crab tally is in, and a winner is declared.
Get 'Em Back Safe!
The fishing fleet sets off to brave the deadly Bering Sea and cash in on king crab. First, the Northwestern must make some quick repairs. The Wizard trains two greenhorns, and the Time Bandit welcomes Johnathan's son, Scott.
Striking Out
The boats fight a fierce Bering Sea storm front as they stake their claim on coveted grounds. The Time Bandit pulls a prank on the Cornelia Marie, and one Wizard greenhorn starts to fall apart after only 48 hours. The Early Dawn crew must race to finish out their brown crab season and move on to reds before the grounds are completely fished out.
A Numbers Game
A mechanical breakdown presses Edgar to make a dangerous repair on the Northwestern while questionable counting makes Sig lose his temper. Hard work separates the greenhorns on the Wizard, and Phil's failing health impacts the crew of the Cornelia Marie.
Unsafe and Unsound
Greenhorns, skippers and family fishing dynasties begin to crack. On the Northwestern, Sig and Edgar have a contest to see who can fish the longest without sleep. Johnathan has a brush with death on the Time Bandit, and Phil's son starts a new tradition on the Cornelia Marie.
No Mercy
Tempers flare aboard the Wizard and the Northwestern, and the Time Bandit has a dangerous electrical short. On the Cornelia Marie, Phil's health deteriorates. The Early Dawn runs headlong into high seas when its greenhorn falls asleep at the wheel.
Racing the Clock
With a few weeks left in king crab season, the fate of every deckhand's paycheck sits squarely on his captain's shoulders. The Time Bandit has had good fishing but a string of bad luck with the crew and boat. The Wizard found the crab early and never lost the scent, and the North American returns to duty.
Seeking the Catch
As the king crab season ticks down, mass amounts of stinging jellyfish in unfilled pots add insult to injury. The Cornelia Marie faces losing their captain for good, and crew mistakes aboard the Northwestern could be costly. A last-minute addition to the fleet, the North American, scrambles to make up for lost time.
No Season for Old Men
As the king crab season comes to an end, a deck accident slows down the Northwestern. A power outage comes at an inopportune time for the Cornelia Marie, and the North American makes a desperate play. The Wizard and the Time Bandit race for the String of the Week prize.
Storm Season
Opilio crab season begins, and a dual storm system challenges a patched Cornelia Marie and almost costs the Time Bandit two men. A medical emergency brings in the U.S. Coast Guard, but freezing spray puts everyone's lives at risk.
Blow Up
A routine Coast Guard rescue becomes a battle against nature. The Cornelia Marie heads to land for repairs while fatigue causes mistakes on the Northwestern. A greenhorn on the Wizard locks horns with the captain, and the Time Bandit heads for better grounds.
Big Weather, Big Trouble
The Time Bandit's captain Johnathan joins the deck crew and promptly has an accident while showing off his skills. The Northwestern crew is irritating their captain, a deckhand on the Wizard barely escapes a huge wave, and a greenhorn on the North American is hazed.
Mortal Men
Massive storm waves tear up the decks of the Early Dawn, the North American and the Northwestern. On the Cornelia Marie, Captain Phil Harris injures his ribs and begins coughing up blood, but he refuses to head in to port for medical attention until his crew refuses to work.
Fresh Blood
The Cornelia Marie's captain Phil heads for the hospital, so Murray struggles to take over the helm. The Northwestern strains its crane to the breaking point and destabilizes the ship. The Wizard springs a serious leak, and a greenhorn gets fired.
Changing Tides
While the Northwestern fights the ice pack, the Wizard sets off from Dutch Harbor, Alaska, with tempers flaring and a new greenhorn. Captain Phil's future on the Cornelia Marie is in question, so the crew struggles on without their captain. The Time Bandit has a near-fatal mistake and then has to make a tough choice.
Catch as Catch Can
The Arctic ice pack descends as the fleet makes its final push. The Northwestern and the Wizard battle freezing spray. The Cornelia Marie's crew suffers from "Bering Sea dementia" while the Time Bandit's crew is at its breaking point.
The Final Hour
The captains race to catch the last of their remaining quotas while battling ice and equipment issues. The Time Bandit's Scottie makes a near fatal mistake while working the hydraulic system, and an ominous message comes across the radio as the men head for home ports.
Everything on the Line
The king crab fleet faces huge stakes before the boats even cast off. Captains Keith Colburn and Phil Harris could be sidelined by life-threatening illnesses, and all the captains are under huge financial pressure from costly summer boat repairs.
Red Skies in the Morning
The fleet is hunting down the elusive king crab when a vicious storm kicks up, and a mayday goes out. The Coast Guard launches rescue helicopters, and the captains stay glued to their radios, anxiously awaiting news of their brother fishermen.
Stay Focused or Die
The fleet is still dialing into the crab after a typhoon claimed another boat. As soon as the weather clears, the captains of the Time Bandit, Cornelia Marie, Wizard and Northwestern send their crews right back to fishing. Hauling and setting pots is treacherous work, and if the crews don't stay focused on their work, they could die.
Put Up or Shut Up
In week four of king crab season, seven souls have perished, but the fishermen soldier on. Grueling hours and vicious hazing test the greenhorns, and some start to crack. The smallest boat in the fleet, the Lisa Marie, arrives on the scene with a young crew and something to prove.
Long Haul, Short Fuses
Crab pots are coming up empty, and the skippers are out of ideas. Low bait and long grinds wear down the crews, and tempers flare. On the Cornelia Marie, the Harris brothers have a war of words, and a wildly swinging pot could do fatal damage on the Time Bandit.
Deadline
An upcoming drop in the price of king crab has the skippers rushing to finish their season, but crew battles and a fierce Arctic storm block the way. The Cornelia Marie's relief captain Murray Gamrath proves that not everyone is cut out to find the crab, and on the tiny Lisa Marie, poor crab and bullying drive a deckhand to the brink.
Down to the Wire
The king crab season is down to the wire, and the captains are desperate to top off their quotas. It's looking bleak in fished-out grounds. Some boats dig deep for an end-of-season sprint, and other boats just scrape by.
Payback Time
It's the start of opilio crab season, and anything the Bering Sea held back during king crab season is now being paid out in spades. The skippers have their eyes on the oncoming ice pack, but it's a lethal, 40-foot rogue wave that's on the hunt. Captain Phil Harris reunites with the Cornelia Marie, and the Time Bandit crew targets the Northwestern's greenhorn for some sweet revenge.
No Second Chances
The fleet arrives on the opilio grounds and struggles with ice, big seas and bad information to hunt down the crab. A skipper regrets sending his men out in savage weather to save the boat, but there are no second chances on the Bering Sea.
Sea of Misery
In the third week of opilio crab season, long hours and miserable conditions have the crews turning on each other. The Wizard reels from a monster wave that banged up the crew, and an old deckhand is ready to exit the Time Bandit.
Lockout
After weeks battling freezing spray, 40-foot waves and subzero temperatures, the skippers have begun plugging their boats with opilio crab. As they race to the harbor in St. Paul, Alaska, for offload, the 250,000-square-mile Arctic ice pack stands in their way.
A Slap in the Face or a Kick in the Butt
Halfway through the season, each skipper faces his own personal torture with frozen crab, frozen gear and a frozen harbor. On the Northwestern, Sig Hansen battles a fierce cigarette addiction and a fierce storm. The Time Bandit's Captain Andy Hillstrand enters St. Paul harbor, which is frozen enough to walk across.
Ends of the Earth
The fleet gets word of great fishing by the ice pack, and captains Keith Colburn and Phil Harris fight over fishing turf. Sick of hauling mangled, barnacle-ridden crab down south, Captain Harry Lewis of the Incentive faces his fears and climbs north to frozen waters. Sig Hansen pushes himself and the Northwestern crew to the edge with a sleepless, 38-hour grind.
Bitter Tears
Weeks into opilio crab season, the fleet is tired and desperate for home, and deadly mistakes are made. The crews learn that when an ocean lies between a fisherman and his family, tragedy at home spells gut-wrenching heartbreak at sea.
Day of Reckoning
The opilio season is almost over, but an Arctic storm front has the skippers on edge. The boats race to plug their tanks with crab and get back to port unscathed. Sig Hansen drives the Northwestern crew to finish through subzero temperatures, and the Wizard takes chances with the fury of the Bering Sea.
Shipwrecked
In the final 24 hours of the opilio crab season, a savage Arctic storm causes multiple vessels to send out maydays. The Coast Guard attempts to save four men before their boat is pounded into splinters against jagged rocks. The weather tests the captains of the Wizard, the Northwestern and the Cornelia Marie.

A white knuckle, boat-crippling passage stands between the Time Bandit and their final offload. The Cornelia Marie loses power, and a broken circulation pump puts the entire season's worth of king crab in jeopardy.
When Hell Freezes Over
After the Cornelia Marie runs into a reef, Captain Phil Harris faces another massive repair and anxiety about a delayed season. On the winter crab grounds, the skippers run into a huge ice storm, and they're forced to dump icy pots far from their honey holes or risk capsizing.
